Jim Staley

*** Update as of July, 2020: Jim Staley was released from prison. No other information is available other than a youtube of his wife picking him up sometime during the last week of June, 2020.

*** To preface this article: In August of 2015, Jim Staley was sentenced to seven years in federal prison and ordered to repay $3.3 million to elderly investors he defrauded in an investment scam. Jim Staley, 40, pleaded guilty in April to four counts of wire fraud, admitting that he cheated others while making $570,000 for himself.

Jim Staley was then jailed weeks early after trying to retract his guilty plea and challenging the legal basis for his conviction. His self-authored legal motion, filed Sept. 30, 2015 challenges the constitutionality of a series of federal statutes and asks a judge to schedule a trial for Nov. 16, 2015, so that U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch can appear and “testify as to the veracity” of those laws. Staley’s four-page motion uses some language common to the Sovereign Citizen movement, which questions the authority of the U.S. government using coded language and citations of obscure laws. Judge Webber ordered him arrested and taken to prison early, out of concern that he could be a danger to himself or others, or a flight risk, officials said Tuesday.

He is currently incarcerated and is due to be released in October, 2021

Update, June 2019: Mr. Staley was recently transferred to Sandstone, MN due to what the prison viewed as bribery. His wife had sent a box of candy as a thank you for allowing  the wife of a visitor to see Mr. Staley when she was not on the visitor list. The result was a transfer to another prison and was viewed as “an attack” on Mr. Staley by his family. Perhaps they are unaware that anything other than what is allowed to come into the prisons falls within their regulation guidelines which are public knowledge. Well meaning as it was, one simply cannot send gifts to prison staff – it will be viewed as a bribery in the prison system and is a serious and flagrant [however “innocent” it appeared] offense and will be dealt with seriously. The result was that Mr. Staley was transferred to a different prison far away to “protect” the staff.

In 2016, Jim Staley’s Passion For Truth Ministry released information about the dissolution of PFT and their disassociation from Mr Staley. The links that were once available from PFT have been removed from the Internet. There are only two other websites that I am aware of which are keeping this information public.

I am sharing the links from those sites because they have extensive documentation with links connecting oiriginal documents, articles and court documents. Here are the contents of the release from the board of trustees at PFT. Following are internet links regarding Mr. Staley pertaining to his public actions, regarding the courts and the government and his relationship with Passion For Truth Fellowship/Ministries, Inc.

The contents of the news release by the PFT Board of Trustees – July, 16, 2016:

Dear Passion For Truth Family,

It is with great sadness that we need to share some difficult information. Over the past several months substantive allegations of misconduct were brought against Jim Staley.

Although Jim resigned from the Board of Directores in May 2015, he asserted his “spiritual authority” to maintain full control over the entire organization and its operations. This behavior continued through His incarceration until confirmation that he would not be immediately released from prison in January 2016.

In February 2016, the Trustees along with the Ministry Advisory Council began the process of exploring the possibility of rebranding and restructuring PFT in an attempt to move the organization forward following Jim’s imprisonment. Through this process, several concerns arose that led to a full internal investigation.

During this investigation, the board hired a lawyer and CPA to review all of PFT’s financial transactions and policies. Some expense that initially received approval were deemed inappropriate. The lawyer and CPA then assissted with reconciling these issues in accordance with the law. New policies and procedures were adopted to ensure such transactions did not happen again. We also found that Jim approved business contracts, received payments, and has shown a pattern of excessive spending of ministry donations without the knowledge of the Board of Trustees. The board is taking appropriate actions to resolve Jim’s misuse of funds. We have since restructured to allow for increased accountability for that position and to protect the organization and donors.

These financial issues alone are ground for removal from leadership. (1 Timothy 3:2) In addition, despite his teaching gift, Jim has exhibited several character issues and patterns of sin that do not reflect the scriptural qualification for an elder or pastor, such as the following:

* Sought personal gain [Titus 1:7;1 Timothy 3:3; Philippians 2:4
* Domineering leadership, misuses/abuse of authority (1 Peter 5:2-3)
* Manipulation and lying (Titus 1:8;Exodus 20:16)
* Quarrelsome/divisive (1 Timothy 3:3; Titus 3:10)
* Pride/lack of humility (Philippians 2:3)
* Failed to make adequate restitution to his former clients [Leviticus 6:1-5; Proverbs 3:27-28)
* Imprisonment for breaking Federal Laws (1 Timothy 3:2, 1 Timothy 3:7)

Pastor David Robinson has taken these issues before Jim. Additionally, in an attempt to confront Jim on these matters per Matthew 18, Pastor David scheduled a meeting at the prison. Jim requested that two additional witnesses be present, thereby accelerating the Scriptural precedent established in Matthew 18 for dealing with sin. During this meeting, Jim showed no remorse and was quite offended at the information presented to him.

These patterns, a lack of humility when confronted (Mathew 18), and no visible, lasting evidence of repentance from these sins reveal that Jim has not been living in a manner that reflects his position as a pastor and as an elder in his church. In our legally governing role as Trustees and part of this body of believers, along with the spiritual guidance of the Ministry Advisory Council, we have made the difficult decision to disassociate from Jim Staley until such a time a Jim completes a process of restoration. Further, his disqualification as teacher has led to the removal of his teaching from Passion for Truth’s media platforms.

We understand that we have all fallen short of the glory of YHVH. (Romans 3:23) However,those who accept a position of leadership are scripturally held to a higher standard. (James 3:1) We encourage you to join us as we pray for YHVH’s grace, Jim’s restitution, and the well being of the Staley family.

We believe YHVH desires Jim’s restoration and realignment to the the Scriptures. This being said, when Jim exhibits humility and repentance, it is our desire to restore him back into relationship with this body of believers. It is our deeply held belief that in order for Jim to qualify as a teacher in any capacity, he must pay full restitution according to Torah and complete his prision sentence in accordance with his guilty plea.

Ultimately, it is our desire to walk and live out love and grace for Jim and his family. We encourage you not to respond in pride, arrogance, or judgment, but rather with humility and compassion. Because this decision affects the entirety of Passion for Truth, and due to the  Biblical injunction regarding charges against elders, this letter is being posted publicly. (1 Timothy 5:19-21). We ask that you please direct any questions regarding this matter to info@passsionfortruth.com

Respectfully,

Board of Trustees Passion for Truth Fellowship, Inc

The second letter to the PFT Family:

Update from the Board of Trustees

Dear Passion for Truth Family,

Passion for Truth has suffered severe damage through the publicity of Jim’s case both locally and online. Marketplace sales and overall donations have been drastically declining since Jim’s indictment in 2014. Since Jim’s incarceration, many people who supported Passion for Truth because of Jim’s teaching have discontinued their financial support. Additionally, the name Passion for Truth has become a stumbling block.

Passion for Truth was originally established to promote one teacher. The inability to restructure PFT at the core foundation amidst our current financial state, the recent resignation of David Robinson, and Jim’s incarceration have led the Board to make a tough decision. It is with much prayer, counsel, and a heavy heart, that we have concluded YHVH is leading us to dissolve Passion For Truth Fellowship, Inc. On July 8th, the PFT staff has effectively been laid off, but they have agreed to volunteer their time to continue holding services until August 13, 2106. We will continue broadcasting through September 3, 2016. In order to be able to provide these Shabbat services, we ask that you continue to financially support PFT through the dissolution process.

Pastor David has agreed to be involved in an advisory capacity to help PFT through this difficult time of transition. He will continue to be available just as he has been for the local and online communities. We want to bless Pastor David as he follows his calling to help launch a new endeavor. We ask that you join us in support and prayer for that ministry.

As with any loss there is always a time of mourning. Part of the healing process is celebrating the life and testimonies that have been accomplished through YHVH’s hand. Many of us have experienced great personal growth through the power of YHVH’s word during our season at PFT. We encourage you to share your testimony by emailing to ament@passionfortruth.com. You may also direct any questions or concerns to info@passionfortruth.com.

We want to thank all of the supporters, volunteers, staff, and leaders for your prayers, financial support, and faithful service throughout the history of Passion for Truth. While this season is closing, God [sic] is opening new doors, leading all of us into a deeper relationship, and calling us to positions of greater responsibility. It is up to each of us to answer that calling. It is our prayer that we each find strength in communicative and our hope in Yeshua.

“May YHVH bless you and keep you, may YHVH make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; May YHVH lift up His countenance upon you, and give you shalom.”

Respectfully,

Board of Trustees Passion for Truth Fellowship, Inc
